Barcelona star impresses at World Cup

FC Barcelona and Dutch midfielder, Frenkie De Jong, stands out in a tightly contested game vs Senegal.

It was a close game between two evenly matched teams, but Davy Klaassen and Cody Gakpo scored late goals for Louis van Gaal's side thanks to the brilliance of Frenkie De Jong and two errors by Edouard Mendy.

Even though Holland didn't play their best, they are in a good spot going into their upcoming match against Ecuador.

Frenkie de Jong did do a lot more than giving a match winning assist in the second half as he accidentally connected with Lions of Teranga midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate's private region as they both jumped to head the ball, Dutch midfield maestro Frenkie De Jong's hand accidentally collided with Kouyate's private part in a wince-inducing moment. To make matters worse, it appeared that Kouyate tweaked a muscle at the back of his leg, forcing him to be substituted.

Frenkie De Jong who is currently comfortable with his place at his club, Barcelona, had a lot to say during a press conference prior to the game.

'I am very happy in Barcelona.

'When I play, it's great, and in terms of living there, life is perfect. I see myself at Barcelona for as long as possible. I would personally hope for another eight or 10 years.'

He said he had nothing against Barcelona's manager Xavi, even though he did not step in to ask de Jong to stay as the club considered forcing a transfer away from the Nou Camp if he did not reduce his salary.

De Jong said: 'I never got the feeling that Xavi was against me. To the media, he said that he was happy with me but that there were also the financial [issues] at the club to consider.

'I think it was difficult for him to speak about it. He is not the one making these decisions. He left the possibility of me leaving open because he never came out and said: 'Frenkie is staying no matter the financial situation,' but I don't put the blame on Xavi’

Memphis Depay came on in the second half for the final 30 minutes and was involved in the second goal deep in added time as Louis Van Gaal’s side picked up three big points in a tough match.

Frenkie and Memphis' next match is against group leaders Ecuador on Friday. The winner of that match will automatically qualify for the knockout stage with one game remaining.
